Risks and mitigations
Overall adoption risk: Medium
For a 10 to 100 person UK business with in-house IT or an MSP, moving some staff to Linux laptops.
Pre-built, Canonical-certified Ubuntu removes most of the set-up and driver risk of the Laptop 13, but the UK terms of sale are written for personal use, repairs are mainly self-service, and the model is on pre-order.
Supply and lead times: The model is on pre-order, one laptop per pre-order, and batch dates have moved
- What it means for you
- When checked, the 13 Pro was available only to pre-order, with a £100 deposit and shipping stated as January. Framework allows one laptop per pre-order, so a fleet means many separate pre-orders, or contacting Framework. Framework's own page shows earlier batches moved by one to two months (for example "Expected Sept, previously July"), after first shipments were put back from late June to late July for hardware fixes. Since October 2026 Framework ships each configuration as it becomes ready, so laptops in one order can arrive on different dates. In July 2026 Framework also changed pre-ordered 64GB memory configurations beyond its early batches to 32GB, at the 32GB price, because of memory supply.
- How to reduce it
- Always check stock levels and batch dates on the day you order, and save a copy of the page.
- Contact Framework's business team before ordering more than one or two, and get expected ship dates for each configuration in writing.
- Before the final payment, confirm the configuration that will ship. Under the UK terms you can cancel a pre-order for a full refund of the deposit until the second payment is taken.
- Plan the rollout around the stated shipping batch, with current laptops kept in use until the new ones arrive, and decide in advance how much slip you will accept.
- Pilot with one or two laptops from an early batch before committing the rest.
- What's left
- Delivery dates are estimates under the terms of sale, so the rollout date can move.
Hardware and drivers: A new model, with its Linux install guide still marked "coming soon"
- What it means for you
- Framework's Linux page lists a compatibility chart for the 13 Pro but marks its install guide as coming soon. Ubuntu is certified by Canonical; for other distributions you rely on Framework's general Linux support and community testing.
- How to reduce it
- Buy it pre-built with Ubuntu, the configuration Canonical has certified.
- If you use another distribution, choose Fedora, the other one Framework officially supports, and test one unit with your docks, monitors and peripherals first.
- Roll out firmware updates through LVFS, which Framework uses for this model, with your usual Linux update tooling.
- What's left
- Early batches of a new model can need firmware fixes, so keep one test machine for updates.
Security and compliance evidence: The standard UK terms of sale are written for personal use
- What it means for you
- The UK terms say Framework sells to consumers for personal use, and exclude liability for lost profit or business interruption if you use the laptops for business. This applies to the 13 Pro as much as to Framework's other laptops.
- How to reduce it
- Before buying a fleet, contact Framework's business team (business@frame.work) and ask which terms apply to a business order or purchase order, and with which company.
- Keep the written answer with your purchase records.
- What's left
- Unless Framework agrees other terms, business buyers rely on the same terms as consumers.
Support depth: Warranty repairs are mainly self-service, with a 24-hour response goal for business support
- What it means for you
- In the UK, the warranty lasts two years. Framework may send you a replacement part and a repair guide rather than fix the laptop, and does not pay for your labour. Its business support channel aims to respond within 24 hours.
- How to reduce it
- Register as a business customer so requests reach the business support team.
- Keep a small stock of common spare parts and one spare laptop, so a fault does not stop someone working. Framework staff say parts for a new model normally go on sale only after its pre-orders are complete, so 13 Pro-specific parts may not be available to buy until then.
- Back up each laptop before a repair. The warranty does not cover data loss, and a repair may mean reinstalling the operating system.
- Train one person, or agree with your MSP, to carry out repairs using Framework's published guides.
- What's left
- The warranty describes replacement parts or a mail-in repair, not on-site visits, so someone on your side does most repairs.
Total cost: A higher starting price than the Laptop 13, with no volume discounts or demo units
- What it means for you
- The 13 Pro DIY Edition starts at £1,199, against £799 for the Laptop 13 DIY Edition, both VAT included. Framework offers no volume discounts or test laptops, and business purchases are prepaid by card, ACH or wire, or by purchase order arranged through the business team.
- How to reduce it
- Buy one or two laptops first to evaluate, as Framework suggests.
- For a large order, ask the business team about custom configurations, which Framework offers with enough lead time.
- Count the set-up time the pre-built Ubuntu option saves against the Laptop 13 DIY Edition in a three-year cost model.
- What's left
- Upfront cost per laptop stays at list price, though longer life and part upgrades may offset it over time.
When not to switch
If you need laptops in hand now, the pre-order wait may rule the 13 Pro out; check stock of the Laptop 13 or another Linux-ready laptop. If you need Windows Autopilot zero-touch deployment, Framework supports it for US-based customers only. If you have no in-house IT or MSP to carry out repairs from parts, a business laptop with on-site warranty service will be simpler. If you are happy to build and install each laptop yourself, the Laptop 13 DIY Edition costs less. A hybrid setup works well, buying a few 13 Pros for staff moving to Ubuntu while the rest keep their current machines.
